Languages

At Duncraig Primary School, students learn French as part of the Languages learning area, developing their ability to communicate in another language and engage with different cultures.

Our program is aligned with the Western Australian Curriculum: Languages – French, which can be accessed here:
French: Second Language – WA Curriculum

The study of French supports students to build communication skills, intercultural understanding and an appreciation of global diversity, preparing them to participate in an increasingly connected world. [k10outline….wa.edu.au]

French at Duncraig Primary School is delivered by our specialist teacher, Madame Peggy Anly, who brings a rich cultural background and a fluent, engaging teaching style to the classroom.

Students experience a welcoming and calm environment, beginning each lesson with soothing tones and familiar routines that support confidence and readiness to learn. From here, students actively engage in practical, verbal activities, using the French language in meaningful and interactive ways.

As students progress through the year levels, they:

  • Develop increasing complexity in speaking and understanding French
  • Build vocabulary and sentence structures through repetition, modelling and conversation
  • Gain confidence in listening, speaking and responding in a second language

Our French program is designed to be immersive, enjoyable and inclusive for all learners.

Students engage with the language through:

  • Songs and music, supporting pronunciation, rhythm and memory
  • Videos and visual resources, helping students connect language with context
  • Frequent opportunities to speak, practise and interact with peers

These approaches support students to develop both language skills and confidence in communication.

A highlight of the Languages program at Duncraig Primary School is the opportunity for students to showcase their learning.

The program culminates in an annual assembly, where students present their skills through performances, demonstrations and spoken French. This event celebrates student achievement and builds pride in learning a new language.

Through our French program, we aim to develop students who:

  • Communicate confidently in another language
  • Appreciate different cultures and perspectives
  • Show curiosity about the world beyond their immediate environment
  • Build skills that support lifelong learning

At Duncraig Primary School, learning French provides students with valuable opportunities to broaden their horizons and connect with the wider world.
