Technology

At Duncraig Primary School, our Technologies program equips students with the skills and knowledge to become innovative, creative and responsible users of technology in an ever?changing world.

The Technologies learning area is aligned with the Western Australian Curriculum and is divided into two key strands:

  • Design and Technologies
  • Digital Technologies

Further information about the WA Technologies Curriculum can be accessed here:

At Duncraig Primary School, Technologies is taught through a structured, whole?school approach, with each strand delivered across dedicated semesters.

Our program emphasises:

  • Design thinking processes, where students plan, create, test and refine solutions
  • A strong focus on problem?solving and innovation, encouraging creativity and critical thinking
  • Explicit teaching combined with hands?on, practical learning experiences

In Design and Technologies, students engage in a range of practical, real?world projects that develop their ability to design, create and evaluate solutions.

Projects vary from year to year and may include:

  • Designing and making simple items such as food products (e.g. constructing a sandwich)
  • Building and testing structures such as marble runs
  • Working with materials, tools and processes to solve design challenges

Through these experiences, students learn to apply creativity, planning and evaluation skills in meaningful contexts.

In Digital Technologies, students develop skills in computational thinking, coding and digital systems through engaging, age?appropriate tools and programs.

Students work with a variety of technologies, including:

  • Robotics, such as Bee Bots, Dash and Dot, Spheros and Lego Mindstorms, to develop sequencing, problem?solving and coding skills
  • Coding platforms on school?owned devices, including:
    • code.org
    • Scratch
    • Tynker
    • Swift Playgrounds

These programs support students to design algorithms, create digital solutions and understand how technology works.

An important component of our Technologies program is teaching students to be responsible digital citizens.

This includes learning how to:

  • Use technology safely and respectfully
  • Protect personal information and maintain privacy online
  • Communicate appropriately in digital environments
  • Recognise reliable information and use digital resources ethically

These skills are essential in preparing students to navigate and contribute positively to the digital world.

Duncraig Primary School has historically implemented a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program. We are currently transitioning to a school?owned device model, with the goal of ensuring equitable access for all students by 2028.

This approach will support consistent learning experiences, enhance digital safety and ensure all students have access to appropriate technologies.

Through our Technologies program, we aim to develop students who:

  • Think creatively and solve complex problems
  • Work collaboratively and adapt to new challenges
  • Use technology confidently and responsibly
  • Innovate and apply their learning in real?world contexts

At Duncraig Primary School, we prepare students to thrive in a digital and technologically rich future.
