Newsletter 30th August 2024

On Wednesday, the day started with students competing in the 200 metre races which was exciting to watch with some close finishes and great personal best achievements.  Students then competed in long jump, throws and the 400-metre event.   It was great to see the students supporting and encouraging each other across all the factions.

The skies cleared for the Faction Athletics carnival today which was a combination of community, skill and sportsmanship.  Thanks to Ted Orzel, teachers and staff who have worked for many weeks coaching the students and helping to ensure the success of the day.  Thanks must also go to the many volunteers who assisted on the day including our parent helpers, starter Brad McCallum, P&C members who ran a fantastic bake stall and the many parents who helped with set up and pack up.

Congratulations to the students who competed so well individually and for their faction.

At school, Book Week 2024 was back and better than ever!   The students had submitted images of a unique or favourite place to read and these were playing on the big screen.

Each class and their teachers and education assistants joined in a magnificent parade.  Year 6 students overviewed book characters -both students and teachers were asked important questions about their book and costume including – your favourite place to read.

The teachers and staff went all out this year with costumes and colour with crayons, Dr Zeuss, Butterflies, Willy Wonker, Peter Pan, Roger Hargreave’s Little Miss Sunshine, Mr Bump.

Thanks to the English Commitee who did a fantastic job of organising Book week activities and the parade. Sandy Firman, Louise Olroyd, Alex Collett, Michelle Moyes and to the year 6 teachers and leaders for setting up the assembly, coordinating the media and producing such quality journalistic skills.

Room 4 Assembly

Room 4 Assembly entertained us with different generations’ view of technology and how it can support and enrich but some negative elements were presented that we need to guard against.
Everything a student needs to be a safe and ethical digital user was presented to including:
  • Keeping passcodes private
  • Reporting anything that makes you feel unsafe
  • Only going on websites that are safe and that have been approved by a teacher/ parent
  • Never give out my name, phone numbers, school, address or any personal information about myself or others online
  • Never use social media whilst at school
  • Check with parents before using any social media or platforms outside of school hours

Fathers Day

This weekend we celebrate Fathers, Grandfathers and significant male figures in our lives. Classes have been working at fever pitch to ensure their gifts and events for their dads and male figures were ready to go – including tie dyed socks, breakfasts, Ties and cards.

We wish all our fabulous dads, granddads, uncles and male figures a wonderful day on Sunday.

Take care everyone!

Athletics Champions 2024

Congratulations to all of our Athletics Champions and Runner Up Champions for 2024!

Exciting Fortnight of Science Exploration

Our students have been busy diving into a range of fascinating science topics over the past two weeks!
  • Year 6 students have been exploring solubility and saturation in water, discovering how different substances dissolve and what it means to reach a saturated solution.
  • Year 5 has focused on viscosity, learning about how liquids flow and the factors that influence their movement.
  • Year 4 students have investigated the absorbency and tensile strength of materials, gaining insights into how different materials behave under various conditions.
  • Year 3 has been studying the changing states of materials, learning how substances transition between solid, liquid, and gas forms.
  • Year 2 students have explored reversible and irreversible changes through making mixtures, helping them understand the difference between physical and chemical changes.
  • Year 1 has enjoyed hands-on investigations into the properties of different types of paper and wrapping materials, sparking curiosity about everyday objects.
  • Our Pre-primary students have been learning about natural and man-made materials, discovering the purposes and uses of different materials in our world.
These activities have provided our students with valuable hands-on experience, deepening their understanding of important scientific concepts while making learning fun and engaging!

Home Inquiry Challenge

To extend our learning beyond the classroom, we’re excited to introduce a Chemical Science Inquiry Challenge! Here’s your question:

Can you find an example of a reversible change and an irreversible change that can be demonstrated at home?

Bring your findings, along with a brief explanation of each change, to school for a chance to earn a dojo ticket. There will be a box in the classroom to place your entries—don’t forget to put your name on them! Email entries will also be accepted at nadine.jackson@education.wa.edu.au.
Exceptional entries will receive a special shout-out in the next newsletter. Happy investigating, and we can’t wait to see what you discover!

And here’s a little joke to leave you smiling:

Why do chemists like nitrates so much?
Because they’re cheaper than day rates!

Until next fortnight, keep experimenting and stay curious!

Duncraig Library visits

During Book Week, celebrations, classes walked across to the Duncraig Library to listen to a variety of children authors and illustrators talk about their passion – writing children’s books.

Room 6 participated in an excursion to the Duncraig Library. We were fortunate to listen to writer and illustrator Renee Treml.  Renee has illustrated many graphic novels and she explained to students how to create a basic character illustration. Our budding illustrators had a go at creating characters, led by Renee’s expertise. It was a creative and enjoyable session, enjoyed by all.

P&C Bake Sale

A big thank you to the P&C and Room 13 for all your efforts with the Baked Treats before Room 13’s assembly on Thursday.
We also appreciate your classroom filling the canteen volunteer shifts this fortnight Lots of new faces coming to help!
We thank the P&C and all the volunteers who baked scrumptious goodies for the Athletics Carnival which was a huge success.

Room 17 – Learning how to code

Room 17 have really enjoyed their session Learning to Code which helps build essential skills like critical thinking and problem solving.

Playground Equipment before and after school

We thank our families who ensure that their children do not play on playground equipment before or after school including the Kindy play area. A number of injuries have occurred over the past weeks and we remind families that there is no teacher supervision in play areas including playground equipment.

Thank you for your continued support and cooperation in making DPS a safe and positive environment for everyone.
