Principal’s Update – Week 6 Term 1 2024

Year 4 Indigenous Art Incursion

Our Year 4 students recently had the pleasure of hosting an enriching visit from Mrs. Kate Plichta, a respected Kungurrakan Elder from the Northern Territory. Mrs. Plichta led an engaging discussion about Aboriginal culture, delving into the rich diversity of art within Aboriginal communities and the profound significance of Aboriginal Art.

This visit served as a perfect complement to our ongoing Visual Art unit, which centres on Australian Aboriginal art this term. Aboriginal art is intricately woven with cultural traditions, reflecting stories, connections to the land, and spiritual beliefs.

Throughout this exploration, our students immersed themselves in a wide array of techniques, symbols, and narratives found in Aboriginal art. This experience not only refined their artistic skills, but also cultivated a deeper understanding and appreciation for Indigenous Australian culture.

Assembly Super Stars!

At this week’s assembly, the Year 4 students from Room 8 hosted and presented a stunning drumming spectacular. Congratulations on a well-presented assembly, Year 4 students!

Congratulations also to this week’s Merit Certificate recipients.

Save the date – ANZAC Service 2024

Please save the date, Monday 22nd April 2024, for the Duncraig Primary School ANZAC Service. This service is entirely student-led and features our school choir. The service commences at 9.00am in the Assembly area. All parents and families are welcome. For any parents who are currently serving, or have previously served, in the defence forces, you are welcome to wear your uniform, service medals and sit as a ‘special guest’. Please contact me if you would like to take up this offer or contribute to our service.

PBS Focus – We give everyone the opportunity to learn.

During weeks 5 & 6, our behaviour expectation that we have been focusing on is, “We give everyone the opportunity to learn.” This means that:

  • We walk around the school in a quiet, respectful manner.
  • We listen to our teachers and never interrupt.
  • We work quietly so that our classmates are not distracted.

Clean up Duncraig

Last week we encouraged our students to Clean up Duncraig, recognising Clean up Australia Day on Sunday 3rd March. Not only did we clean up our school, but our students helped out at home and in the community.

Farewell (for now), Mrs O’Connor

Our wonderful ‘money lady’, Mrs Jenny O’Connor has left us for 12 months, to take up a corporate training position with the Department of Education. Mrs O’Connor will return to us at the start of Term 2, 2025. It is a great opportunity for her, and she will be a great asset to the Department. Starting Term 2 2024, Ms Sandi Davies will be our Manager Corporate Services. We look forward to welcoming her to our school.

School Board Annual Open Meeting

On Monday 11th March, the School Board will be holding the Annual Open Meeting for 2024. This meeting is open to anyone in the school community. If you are interested in finding out about the priorities identified by the School Board in 2024, or would like to know more about the role of the School Board, you are invited to attend.
